We work hard to ensure the highest standard of corporate behaviour in all our businesses.   A significant step forward in 2006 has been the roll out of our corporate responsibility management system to our international operations.

Each of our international businesses now has a corporate responsibility segment within its Steering Wheel, and all businesses report quarterly on energy, water and waste.   Our international businesses also report on a further set of corporate responsibility KPIs chosen locally in response to local community and stakeholder feedback.   We believe this will strengthen the corporate responsibility performance of our international businesses.

There are common corporate responsibility themes across our international businesses, for example, the expectation that we will create jobs, treat our suppliers fairly, reduce our impact on the environment and support good causes.

Community Plan

Our businesses in eight countries have developed a Community Plan to launch in 2007/08, with a second wave of countries launching their first Community Plans in 2008/09.   By the end of 2008/09, our international businesses will have a Corporate Responsibility Committee, Corporate Responsibility Strategy and a Community Plan.

The plans have consistent themes covering health and nutrition, suppliers, the environment, and making our stores more local.   Specific projects and initiatives have a local flavour, tailored to the communities where we operate.

The UK has been working closely with in-country teams to share the lessons learnt as the UK Community Plan has been developed and implemented.
