We aim to choose a charity which is close to the hearts of our staff and customers, works locally in the communities we serve and is focused on delivering practical benefits.   The Charity of the Year becomes the main focus for staff fundraising and receives a 20% 'top up' from the Tesco Charity Trust.

Under the partnership theme of Providing more nursing care at home, Tesco has chosen to support Marie Curie Cancer Care as our Charity of the Year for 2008.

One of the key attractions of the campaign is that it is geared towards helping people at a local level.   Marie Curie Nurses provide high quality care in the home so that terminally ill people have the choice of dying in their own homes - surrounded by the people and the things they love.   The charity's Nurses give family members the vital emotional support and advice they need and usually provide care at night, allowing them to rest.   Their help comes absolutely free.

Tesco staff and customers in over 2,000 stores and depots across the UK will aim to raise £2.5 million to fund an additional 125,000 hours of nursing care for patients and their families throughout the UK with fundraising events in store throughout the year.   Last year such events included sponsored bike rides, 5-a-side football tournaments, wig wearing competitions, family fun days and much more!

All the money raised by staff in stores, depots and offices across the country will be spent in their local communities.

In 2007 we raised over £2 million for the British Red Cross.
